To mark the beginning of a new academic year, the Writing Café will be hosting a week long series of writing activities for University students. 

These sessions are open to students from all subject disciplines, and you'll come away feeling reinvigorated!

Monday 26 September: Self-Portraiture Timelines

The importance of our own stories is often overlooked. Reflect on your past, present and future experiences as a writer by creating an illustrated timeline. Discuss your journey so far with others.

Tuesday 27 September: Still Life Poetry

Choose from a variety of mystery objects linked to the process of learning. Explore the world from your object’s perspective, using your senses and imagination. What will you discover through your new nature?

Wednesday 28 September: The Wonders of Our World…Framing Nature with Words 

Join Dr Stacey DeAmicis and Katharine Clayton in the Physic Garden to take time to quietly observe, to attentively listen, and to inhale deeply, while letting your senses fully tune in to the natural world around you. Sharing of prose, poetry, free-form writing, and everything in between will be encouraged.

Note: Please assemble in the Writing Café at 13:00 where you'll be taken to visit the Physic Garden. 

Thursday 29 September: Black out Poetry

We routinely read, select and reject information in the process of researching and writing. This activity utilises journal articles to create unique poems through the satisfying process of black out. Expect to come away with inky fingers!

Friday 30 September: Writing with Charlotte

Dr Alicja Syska will use image analysis to help facilitate academic writing. The fascinating engraving of The Last Toilette of Charlotte Corday will provide a creative springboard for understanding the balance needed between description and critical analysis.
