Dr Jim O'Brien will give this talk titled 'Populations In Extremis'. He will be relating to his work in the Phillippines typhoon and West Africa ebola crisis.

Jim trained as a GP in Ireland and then in Public Health medicine. After working in Malawi and the Solomon Islands he became Director of Public Health/Medical Director in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall; and Deputy Regional Director of Public Health NHS South West. Jim has recently retired as the PHE Centre Director for Wessex and National Diabetes.

In 2013 he worked for WHO Philippines in the immediate aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda. This led on to longer term system strengthening with work on disaster preparedness and improving disease surveillance there. More recently he was seconded to West Africa as a Health Adviser for DFiD, Sierra Leone to help to co-ordinate foreign efforts after local medical services were overwhelmed. He continues to work in Madagascar and recently Ethiopia to help develop a new rural medical school.
