Nutrition and dietetics in infancy and childhood (masters level)

Key features

This 20 credit masters-level module will enable you to further understand the advice given to families, healthcare professionals and policy groups regarding normal infant, child and adolescent nutrition and feeding. You will critically examine the evidence base for health promotion strategies in feeding throughout childhood and have the opportunity to debate and evaluate the evidence base for current nutritional strategies for the feeding of infants, children and adolescents.

This module can be taken as a standalone short course, as a pathway specific module towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Paediatric Dietetics or as an optional module towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Dietetics and is accredited by the British Dietetics Association.

Course details

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  • critically explore and debate the evidence base underpinning nutritional requirements and feeding recommendations for infants, children and adolescents by undertaking analysis of complete, incomplete and contradictory areas of knowledge, in the context of diminishing risk.
  • critically explore and apply the influence of lifestyle, culture and socioeconomic status on feeding and management of childhood feeding practices, including in- depth discussion around alternative approaches.
  • reflect on and evaluate own working practices and the role of the multidisciplinary team and social support in the management of nutrition related to normal growth and its variations.
  • understand and evaluate the effectiveness of behaviour change and communication strategies to effect change in feeding practice and policies.
  • critically analyse and synthesise the political and ethical agenda surrounding childhood nutrition issues.

Assessment

The assessment for this module is a 4,000 word reflective essay.

Module dates

This module will require you to attend four taught days in London, delivered in one day sessions over a period of four consecutive days.

The dates for this module are 4, 5, 6 and 7 June 2019.

Please be aware that all modules run to minimum numbers. In the event that there are low numbers, this module may be rescheduled to an alternative date. Some modules are also subject to maximum numbers.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to undertake this module must:

  • currently be working in the field of clinical nutrition and dietetics .
  • be a registered dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • have an in depth knowledge of nutrition and dietetics to honours degree level.
