Student 150 competition

During our 150th anniversary year a student competition was launched on our social media sites to raise awareness of the 150th celebrations. Students were asked to create or design a '150' and post it onto the University's Facebook page. Entrants were judged by the Vice-Chancellor, and also by Facebook page fans by 'liking' their '150'.

Competition winners were presented with a trophy and bag of prizes, including high street gift vouchers, on the University's 150th birthday celebration day.

  • Overall Winner - Ryan Procter
  • Image with the most 'likes' - Ashley Cox and Robert McKie
  • Largest 150 - Luke Bennett
  • Smallest 150 - Matthew Duval
  • Most Creative 150 - Justina Fakejevaite
  • Special Recognition - Chris Jones, Chris Cook, Graham Wheaton, Gemma Collins and Nathan Nicholls

150th Enterprise sculpture

As part of the 150th legacy project a 150th 'Enterprise' sculpture was created, based on the winning students' design of the VC Enterprise Awards 2012 trophies.

The oak sculpture stands ten times as tall as the trophies - 1.2m at its highest point.

3D Product Design students Sean Bunton and Chris Grover designed the winning trophy on which the sculpture was based. Their inspiration came from the silhouette of the Roland Levinsky Building and the stepped layers represent development and achievement within the University.

Craftsman and former University technician Jeromy Rowett sourced the oak from a local sawmill and created the sculpture in his Yealmpton workshop.

The project was part funded by a successful bid from University cleaning supervisor Anne Palmer, under the Students as Partners Change Academy.

It was lowered onto a concrete plinth outside the Roland Levinsky Building by a team of structural engineers.

The sculpture was unveiled as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations on 24 October 2012.

University of Plymouth friends and family fun day

The University of Plymouth friends and family fun day took place in the graduation marquees on Plymouth Hoe in September 2012 and was open to University staff, their families and friends, as well as our newly arriving students, and their families and friends. There was a raft of fun activities for everyone to enjoy from a climbing wall and skate park, to cookie and birthday cake decorating, and Olympic sporting activities and challenges.

This event was coordinated by University of Plymouth events management student Hannah Fleming, during her placement year, working with the External Relations events management team.

150th scholarships

The 150th scholarship was designed to reward excellence, inspire individuals to reach their full potential, and broaden their horizons.
