In the last year, Plymouth alumni have volunteered over 5000 hours to support current students and the University.
From attending networking events to appearing on panels and delivering guest lectures, our alumni make a real difference to the experience of our students.
Hear about their experience in their own words.
If you would like to get involved, complete our online form or read more about these opportunities below.
Mentor a studentCould your experiences help to raise the career aspirations and achievement of a Plymouth student? The Professional Mentoring programme offers students the opportunity to meet with an experienced professional, relevant to their career aspirations, who will mentor them over a six month period.
If you have enquired about mentoring previously then you might like to know that we are making some changes to the programme to enable us to welcome mentors from further afield. This year mentor meetings can take place remotely, via email, phone or Skype. We do encourage (where possible) that mentors have a least one face to face meeting with their student within the 6 month period.
No previous mentoring experience is necessary as full training is given prior to meeting your student mentee, and support is available from the Careers Service along the way. Complete our Get Involved form to find out more.
Stephen Turner – Electrical and Electronic Engineer, Science and Technology Facilities Council and
MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate
"I became a mentor for the opportunity to offer advice and the relay what I learned from my time as an undergraduate. We discussed the different postgraduate options available, identifying and developing soft skills, the importance of networking and finding university resources that can help him achieve these goals. I've really enjoyed the experience, it is rewarding to see someone taking different decisions about their career path because of input you've given."
Ijaas Imtajali – BEng (Hons) Robotics
"I requested a mentor because I wanted to know more about employability in engineering, especially in robotics. We covered a variety of subjects including CV and interview skills, things I could get involved in whilst at university and the next step after my degree. Stephen has motivated me to become a subject-specific student ambassador, get a summer internship and upgrade my degree to an MEng."

Mike Parker of Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley Executive Director Brian Nixon and colleague Mike Parker visited the campus to finalise a pledge of a scholarship to support students of Maritime Shipping.
"I am a PhD student and I had to interview people with expertise relating to my subject research area. I contacted Jean Almond the Alumni Engagement Manager at the University of Plymouth to see if she could help. She introduced me to three alumni who were working within the area of my subject research. They were all very happy to be contacted and agreed to be interviewed. They provided me with some very valuable information relating to my subject research questions. Their contribution was a big help towards the completion of my qualitative interviewing stage. Thank you to all the alumni for being such a great help."
