I was fortunate enough to have already started working at Boots Opticians before I graduated. Having researched and applied at numerous organisations during my second year of university, I found that it was ideal to have a job lined up from the moment my final exams finished. It allows you to concentrate on getting the best grade possible without having to think about whether or not you will find employment.
What was the most difficult thing you faced finding a job?
Amongst preparing my CV and practising interview skills, the most difficult aspect when searching for a job was finding a place in which there was a strong support network. The staff at University of Plymouth were extremely helpful and suggested various pathways which were on offer in which to progress further within my profession.
What is the best, most exciting or fun thing that you have done in your career (or that you’re most looking forward to)?
Practising as a pre-reg optometrist, the most exciting thing which I have experienced is dealing with a range of patients: some of whom have had rare eye conditions which you only tend to read about in textbooks.
How did studying at Plymouth help you?
A huge advantage of studying optometry at Plymouth was the chance to attend placements in different optometric settings, as well as at Derriford Hospital. There were also opportunities available for gaining plenty of clinical experience within the newly established eye centre.
What is your favourite memory of studying at Plymouth?
The scenery! Having come from a 'normal' town, it was lovely living near the sea and having the opportunity to explore another part of England. Revision sessions didn't seem that bad when sitting near the lighthouse.
Do you stay in touch with other University of Plymouth alumni or lecturers?
I still keep in touch with a few of the lecturers and fellow graduates, which has been extremely helpful. As I am currently a pre-reg optometrist, I am still training to become a fully qualified optometrist; having others to talk to who have qualified or are in the same position as me makes the process much easier.
