The skills I gained on the environmental science course at Plymouth enabled me to go straight into the workplace, able to make a difference for the benefit of the environment. I joined British Gypsum (Saint-Gobain) as an Environmental Assistant but soon gained promotion. My degree not only demonstrated my commitment to the environment, but also a range of skills such as report writing, statistical analysis, understanding of key environmental legislation and problem solving.
My role involved working closely on the implementation of a Saint-Gobain Water Policy across British Gypsum manufacturing sites and in 2012 I was awarded the IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Auditing) Graduate of the Year Award after being nominated by the Environmental Team. The following year I was promoted to Environmental Manager for the British Gypsum East Leake works and I continue to build my environmental knowledge every day.
My three years studying at University of Plymouth were amazing. I strongly recommend not only the environmental science degree, but also University of Plymouth as a whole. The course offered a mixture of theory and practical based experience. The balance between the two was fantastic, and the opportunity to conduct field work in the Malaysian rain forest was a definite draw. Added to that, the University has a fantastic location.
