A Plymouth University academic has been awarded a Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Professor of Ocean Engineering Deborah Greaves is one of the country’s leading marine renewable energy experts, and Director of the University’s COAST Laboratory, one of the leading facilities of its kind anywhere in Europe.
She is also a board member of PRIMaRE (Partnership for Research In Marine Renewable Energy), and recently led the €2million SOWFIA programme, on streamlining of impact assessment for offshore wave farms, as well as projects involving wave energy devices and extreme wave loading.
Now she has received the highest grade of membership available within the ICE, a body representing the 86,000 civil engineers and technicians across the world who design, build and maintain our transport, water, energy, waste and flood infrastructure.
Professor Greaves said: “I enjoy all aspects of my job and having the opportunity to lead the COAST Laboratory and run experiments in the wave basins alongside developing simulations is very exciting. I would encourage anyone with interests in physics, maths, and geography to consider civil engineering. It is an extremely rewarding career with opportunities to travel, to work on exciting projects and to help develop engineering solutions that make a real difference to people's lives.”
Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the profession.
Only those with a position of responsibility in the planning, design, construction, maintenance or management of important engineering work can be awarded this level of membership and add the letters “FICE” to their name.
Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, said: “Gaining ICE Fellowship is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Deborah on joining an elite group of civil engineers. This highly-respected accolade recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession and seniority in the industry.”
The opportunity to join ICE is available to civil engineers, technicians and technical/scientific specialists at every stage of their professional career, from students and apprentices to senior board directors.
