The University’s offshore renewable energy and marine autonomy expertise and facilities have been showcased in an episode of BBC 2’s Great Coastal Railway Journeys.
Series presenter Michael Portillo visited the
Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport laboratory – within our
Marine Building – where he learned about its use for the testing of offshore renewable energy devices.
He met
Professor Deborah Greaves OBE FREng , Director of our
Centre for Decarbonisation and Offshore Renewable Energy , who explained some of the cutting-edge work that takes place in the facility.
She also highlighted the potential impact of ORE technologies, particularly in light of the current drive to advance floating offshore wind generation in the Celtic Sea.
Mr Portillo then travelled to the
Marine Station where he spoke to Technical Specialist
Mr Aaron Barrett about his work on marine autonomous systems.
They spoke about the potential of such systems for surveying the ocean, but also how they could be used to monitor ORE installations.
