Braith Grey

I am a PhD student in the Molecular Microbiology Research Group (MMRG) developing a novel point-of-care diagnostic tool to detect antibiotic resistant urinary tract infections. If successful, our work will reduce time-to-results from days to minutes, while also dramatically improving the accuracy of results. This means patients will receive the most effective treatments, ensuring swift resolution and reducing their risk of recurrent, antibiotic resistant infections.

Prior to my PhD, I graduated from the University of Plymouth's BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with a first-class honours and also worked in Professor Mathew Upton's lab developing novel antimicrobials from deep-sea sponges.

Alongside my research I assist teaching on the BSc Biomedical Science course and engage in outreach events to educate the public about the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In 2022 I co-organised the University's World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) where we hosted several events including a panel talk with experts working on or affected by AMR, a search for new antimicrobials, a pub quiz, and spoke about the issue on BBC Radio Devon.
