Research interests

Current research spans seamount ecology , fisheries , ocean acidificationaquaculture and conservation. I'm also working on Marine Protected Area design using satellite vessel monitoring for fisheries management. My fieldwork sites are currently at volcanic CO2 vents in the Mediterranean and off Japan as well as maerl beds in Norway.

Consultancy work includes a Marine Stewardship Council assessment of the US scallop fishery, an assessment of ship biofouling in African waters for Sach Solicitors Ltd, assessments of the effects of capital dredging in UK waters for Royal Haskoning, assessments of Natura 2000 sites and Marine Conservation Zones for DEFRA and biodiversity reports for OSPAR.  I also conduct commercial diving surveys (e.g. for Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Falmouth Harbour Commissioner,  Natural England, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage) and underwater filming (e.g. for the BBC, CBC (Canada) and ITV).
