Biography
Emeritus Professor of Sociology
Formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research)
I worked at Plymouth University from 2008 to 2013, having previously been Professor of Sociology and Dean of Social Sciences at Essex University, Professor and Head of Department at the University of Leicester, and lecturer at the University of Strathclyde. I have been an active member of the British Sociological Association since 1970,and I am a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Academy of Social Sciences.

1971-72: London School of Economics, engaged in Post-Graduate research. Transferred to staff registration at Strathclyde University, 1974. [Awarded PhD 1976]
1968-71: Kingston College of Technology, reading for External degree of London University. Awarded BSc (Soc) with First Class Honours.
1960-68: Hampton Grammar School, Middlesex. Studying to A-level.

Research interests
My research interests are in the areas of social stratification, power and elites, business organisation, research methods, and sociological theory. I am currently working on a number of issues in the history of sociology, especially sociology in Britain.
