Dr Miriam Noonan

Biography

Lecturer in Occupational Therapy

I teach on a variety of modules for both the undergraduate and postgraduate occupational therapy programmes. In addition to teaching I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students. I have worked in a variety of settings in the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland since qualifying as an occupational therapist in 2007. These include primary care, vocational rehabilitation, as well as acute, and community mental health services, including learning disabilities. I have predominantly worked with adults. I have a keen interest in research, in particular the occupational impact of engaging in a caregiving (family/friend carers) role and the influence caregivers have on patient health and well-being.

I teach and mark on a range of modules across the BSc (Hons), MOccTh (Hons),MSc pre-registration and MSc post-registration programmes in Occupational Therapy.

Research

Research interests

My principal research interests include caregivers (family/friend carers) and the impact of this role on health and well-being, co-occupations among younger spouses living with long-term conditions and the influence of digital technology on health and well-being.

I am a member of the Researchers in Palliative and End of Life Care Research Group

I am happy to discuss PhD opportunities regarding co-occupations, long-term conditions, mental health and caregivers.

My PhD research focused on caregivers and patients living with Heart Failure. I examined the impact of a home based cardiac rehabilitation intervention on the quality of life of caregivers as well as the impact on patient outcomes when caregivers are formally involved in the design and delivery of self-management interventions.

I currently supervise two PhD students.

Other research

I have been involved with the training of NHS staff as part of the NIHR funded (Reference Number RP-PG-1210-12004) rehabilitation enablement in chronic heart failure (REACH-HF) programme. My role involved training facilitators to engage with caregivers in the delivery of the intervention. 2020

I was one of two Occupational Therapists providing a vocational rehabilitation intervention as part of a European Union funded study delivered by the University of Limerick, Ireland. The ‘Working with Arthritis: Strategies and Solutions’ program was an occupational therapy (OT) led vocational rehabilitation (VR) program aimed at supporting people with arthritis to access, remain in or return to work. 2013-2015.

I was active in leading service wide audits when working as an occupational therapist in Mental Health services. This included evaluation of recovery care plans. The outcome of this evaluation led to a service wide update of recovery care plans with increased accessibility for service users and their families. 2009 - 2013.
