All storage technologies are converging towards the absolute quantum limit in order to meet a constant demand for greater storage capacity and speed. In an attempt to overcome the ensuing reduction in signal-to-noise ratios, the application of advanced parallel signal processing techniques and Multi-Dimensional coding to multi-track storage systems, are being investigated to satisfy the demand for both increased storage density and higher data rates. This research has already resulted in a number of Two-Dimensional coding strategies for magnetic recording and it is intended to extend this work to Three-Dimensions for volumetic and holographic optical storage.
