This 20 credit module enables the student to acquire the knowledge and skills to design and conduct a quantitative research project. You will have advanced understanding of different quantitative research methods, data collection strategies, statistical data analysis techniques, writing skills in quantitative research proposals and final manuscripts.
This module may be used as a standalone option as formal training in research methods to support personal fellowships eg. those offered by NIHR ACFs, NIHR-HEE PCAFs and internship schemes.

Develop your skills in conducting quantitative research. This module will give you practical experience in collecting and handling numerical data, statistical analysis techniques and interpreting results.
This module will allow you to critically appraise specific quantitative methods to address research questions. It will provide you with practical experience of using quantitative data analysis techniques including: randomised controlled trials, cross-over designs, cohort, and case control studies.
Using real-world research data from the University of Plymouth and taught by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare experts with special contributions from statisticians and clinical trial unit professionals.
This module will enable you to:
- become adept at using different quantitative research methods including randomised controlled trials and cross-over designs,
- build experience of systematic data analysis using SPSS software (IBM SPSS, New York USA),
- explore a range of topics including: study design, sample size estimation, normal distribution, parametric and non-parametric methods, correlation, regression, graphical display and interpretation of data.
Upon completion the learner will be expected to be able to:
- critically discuss the theoretical backgrounds and ethical principles related to applied quantitative research methods,
- critically discuss the relative strengths, weaknesses and purpose of different applied quantitative research techniques and data collection methods related to research questions,
- perform quantitative data collection strategies,
- critically analyse statistical data using computerised data analysis packages,
- critically discuss quantitative research results and their translation into clinical practice.
