This 20 credit degree-level module enables a midwife whose registration has lapsed to meet the necessary professional requirements to apply for readmission to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register.

An individualised blended learning approach is used incorporating: lead lectures, skills sessions, tutorials, web based learning, workpacks, and self-direct study. Where available and appropriate shared learning with pre-registration student midwives will be undertaken.

Clinical practice placements will reflect the pattern of maternity service delivery within seconding Trust.

Course details

On completion of the module you will be able to:

  • critically examine the influence of health and social policy relevant to the practice of midwifery
  • critically analyse the requirements of legislation, guidelines, codes of practice and policies relevant to the practice of midwifery
  • discuss the current structure and organisation of care, nationally and locally
  • critically examine current issues in midwifery education and practice
  • critically analyse relevant literature and research to inform midwifery practice
  • demonstrate the ability to competently identify and assess need, design and implement interventions and evaluate outcome in all relevant areas of practice, including the effective delivery of appropriate emergency care
  • consistently utilise appropriate communications, teaching and learning skills
  • operate effectively in a team and demonstrates participation in a multi-professional approach to people’s care
  • critically examine your own abilities and learning needs in order to maintain your professional competence through lifelong learning.

Career progression

On successful completion of the module and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) you will be able to apply for Registered Midwife positions within the NHS Maternity Services. Usually a period of preceptorship will be undertaken at Band 5. Following successful completion of this period Band 6 posts within hospital and community maternity services can be applied for.

Further information

The model of provision for return to practice has changed to an employer-led model. Healthcare organisations such as NHS Trusts will be supporting returnees to return to midwifery practice with the intention of employment on successful completion of the module.

This module has a flexible approach to students meeting the requirements to reapply for midwifery registration with the NMC. The combination of theory and practice enables knowledge and skills to be refreshed and applied to contemporary midwifery practice

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the module you need to:

  • have a lapsed Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration as a midwife of three or more years
  • evidence of study within the last five years
  • where the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is used as evidence of literacy, the IELTS examination (academic or general version) with a score of at least 7.2 in the listening and reading sections, at least 7.2 in the writing and speaking sections and an overall average score of 7.2 will be accepted
  • satisfactory clearance of Occupational Health and Disclosure and Barring Service screening. This will be undertaken by your employer.

Fees and funding

Health Education England (HEE) will fund the return to practice module including Tuition fee, Stipend and Placement fee via your trust. Please liaise with your prospective employer.
