Music

From cutting-edge research to magnificent live performances, there is a musical experience for everyone at The Arts Institute.

Through the commissioning and development of new music, alongside supporting new talent and bringing world-class musicians to Plymouth, The Arts Institute is pivotal to the growing music scene across the South West; this includes our programme of participatory community music partnership activities.

The ‘new music’ flagship event is the annual Contemporary Music Festival, promoted in partnership with the University of Plymouth’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR).

Our new Music Director – Dr Robert Taub

An acclaimed pianist known for his interpretations of Beethoven and new music, Dr Robert Taub has performed as guest soloist with many of the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors.

Robert will oversee our entire music strand and plans to use his expertise to make Plymouth’s music scene as ‘vibrant and as great’ as it can be!

Join us for a free talk and performance where Robert will share his thoughts on a range of music and composers. He will also look ahead to some of the concerts coming up in our music programme for 2019.

Contemporary Music Festival 2019: MULTIVERSE

MULTIVERSE is the theme of University of Plymouth Contemporary Music Festival (CMF) 2019, which celebrates the internationally renowned research combining music, engineering and the life sciences developed at the University of Plymouth’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR).

MULTIVERSE proposes a weekend of musical interpretations of the quantum world. It will premiere a duet between a pianist and an Artificial Intelligence improviser, and a piece composed with a quantum computer.

'Transformations' season at The Arts Institute

This season we continue with the theme of Transformations, an apt title as we launch our new name, The Arts Institute. The feeling of change is a very live issue, which we wanted to explore in terms of transformation, when a culture or a way of thinking undergoes a complete shift or turn around. This type of change is different to the revolutionary breaks or schisms we have explored in previous programmes, rather a transformation, at least in a cultural sense, is more often associated with a positive outcome.

This also includes the personal transformations we all undergo, whether through education or new experiences. Retaining the space to have these conversations is vital and we see The Arts Institute as providing an opportunity for you to participate in these discussions alongside experiencing the very best in culture here in Plymouth.
