“It is great to be able to use the knowledge I gained from my masters in a real-world setting – my degree set me up perfectly for employment.”

Achieving the dream

After graduating I have been working full time as a Senior Finance Officer in the Channel Islands, since August 2017.

Completing my masters only made me want to have a job in the finance and investment industry more. I have wanted to do this as a job since the age of six, so it feels like a dream come true!

As a Senior Finance Officer, I make sure the day-to-day accounting of the business is completed and it is great to be able to use the knowledge I gained from my masters degree in finance and Investment in a real-world setting – my degree set me up perfectly for employment. The knowledge I gained at Plymouth helps massively with the daily challenges I face at work.

In my role, I authorise payments to bond providers and make sure all fees are paid for over 2000 clients. I also make FX trades to exchange currencies and liaise with administrators to ensure the payments are then sent on to beneficiaries.

Choosing Plymouth

Location was definitely key in choosing Plymouth. I lived in London while studying for my undergraduate degree in accounting and finance and found the distance from my family hard at times. Being able to travel to university from home every day allowed me to have the support I desperately needed at times.

The course was well structured and included a field trip to the London Stock Exchange, which was very insightful. During my studies I had a lot of support from my course leader, the head of department and some amazing module lecturers. They made it so much easier to succeed with all of their years of expertise and knowledge.

Upon reflection, I would now tell my younger self to not stress as much, or put too much pressure on myself, to trust in my ability to work at a masters level and that all of the hard work will be worth it in the end.

– Charlotte is now a Senior Finance Officer for the Overseas Trust and Pension Limited in Guernsey, Channel Islands.
