"As clichéd as it may sound, my time in Plymouth has broadened my horizons: the friends and experiences gained there have put me in a better position for the future. I strongly feel that the environment there is conducive to graduates fulfilling their potential."

Tell us about your career path since graduation.

I strongly believe that "you are only as good as your next move" and that "you drive your own destiny".

What I'm trying to say is that well before I graduated from Plymouth, I ensured that my plans were laid out and if a good opportunity arose, I would go for it. Truly enough, my first employment in the maritime industry was secured as soon as I returned back from Singapore. My experience studying in Plymouth moulded me to be more internationally minded, which is very advantageous especially because marine is a global business. Soon after, I was offered the opportunity to join Aon, the largest risk broker in the world and I went for it. Being bullish about my development and progression, I started from servicing local clients who are shipowners, traders and the like. After 1.5 years at Aon, now I have been entrusted to service regional and international clients.

There's no telling what the future holds, but always keep an open mind and keep hustling!

Did you decide to change your career path during your studies, and if so, why?

Yes; in fact, I changed my career path after I graduated. After having a coffee session with a director from Clarksons Shipbroker, I was convinced that building my career in the commercial side of the business was the right fit for me. Initially, I was keen to go into operations; however, opportunities did not open up for me.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get in to the same line of work?

It is always important to have an open mind and an open heart. Opportunities will always present themselves to you; just don’t be afraid to take them and change your plans.

How did studying at Plymouth help you?

As clichéd as it may sound, my time in Plymouth has broadened my horizons: the friends and experiences gained there have put me in a better position for the future. I strongly feel that the environment there is conducive to graduates fulfilling their potential.

Do you stay in touch with other University alumni or lecturers?

I meet up constantly with other alumni. Together, during our time in Plymouth, we have formed a strong bond. There is no doubt that moral support from family is very much needed, but when it comes from peers there is an added bonus: especially during tough times (deadlines and examinations).

Would you recommend undertaking a course with the University, and why?

Personally, there were several aspects that I found challenging. I struggled to adjust to the academic structure and I was no expert in writing essays and using academic language. The University provided consultations and help to undergraduates like myself and I am most grateful for it. Within a month or so, I was up and running. There was also a lot of information available to me. I took advantage of the career advice and services, which assisted me in my CV. The University is a place which takes great care of their students and I will definitely recommend it to future students.
